In Genesis 18:1–22:24, Abraham opens his home to strangers, Sarah receives an astonishing promise, and the Torah leads us toward one of its most demanding stories of faith. Parashat Vayera: A Family-Friendly Overview

Vayera opens with Abraham sitting at the entrance of his tent. Although he is recovering from brit milah, he rushes to welcome three visitors and offers food, water, shade, and dignity. The guests announce that Sarah will have a son. Sarah laughs at the impossible news, yet Isaac is born exactly as promised.

The portion then turns to justice. Abraham pleads for the people of Sodom, asking whether a city might be spared for the sake of the righteous. Sodom is destroyed, but Lot and part of his family escape. Later, Hagar and Ishmael are sent into the wilderness, where God hears the boy’s cry and shows Hagar a well. The portion closes with the Akeidah, the binding of Isaac, and Abraham’s intense test on Mount Moriah.

For children, the stories can be approached through age-appropriate questions: What makes a guest feel safe? Why did Abraham speak up for others? How can we notice someone who feels alone? The Torah portion does not offer easy answers to every scene, but it teaches us to listen carefully, protect dignity, and bring kindness into uncertain moments.

A Practical Torah Lesson: Keep the Door Open

Abraham’s hospitality begins before a guest asks for help. He notices people, moves toward them, and creates space. That is a practical Jewish lesson for home, school, synagogue, and community. This week, choose one act of welcome: invite someone new to sit beside you, call a person who may be lonely, offer a meal, or give another family your full attention.

At the Shabbat table, ask each person to name one way your home can become more welcoming. A child might prepare a place card for a guest; an adult might make an introduction or deliver food. Small acts become sacred when they are done with warmth and respect.
