Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah: Torah Reading and Shabbat Times, October 2–4, 2026

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah in Beverly Hills

This Shabbat is a special festival Shabbat rather than a regular weekly Parasha. In the Diaspora, Shemini Atzeret (שמיני עצרת) begins Friday evening, October 2, 2026, and falls on Shabbat, October 3. Simchat Torah (שמחת תורה) follows from Saturday night through Sunday, October 4. Together, these days invite every Jewish family to pause after Sukkot, pray for blessing, and celebrate the Torah by completing its annual reading and immediately beginning again.

Shabbat and Holiday Times for Los Angeles

  • Saturday, October 3: After 7:12 PM, light Simchat Torah candles from a pre-existing flame. Shabbat has ended, but Yom Tov continues.
  • Sunday, October 4: The festival ends at 7:10 PM.

These Beverly Hills/Los Angeles times are for ZIP code 90211. Shabbat times provided by Chabad.org/ShabbatTimes.

The Festival Torah Readings

On Shemini Atzeret, the Diaspora Torah reading is Deuteronomy 14:22–16:17, followed by Numbers 29:35–30:1; the haftarah is I Kings 8:54–66. The reading speaks about giving, caring for those in need, the pilgrimage festivals, and rejoicing before G-d. Yizkor is also recited, and the prayer for rain begins, reminding us that blessing is both spiritual and practical.

On Simchat Torah, we read Deuteronomy 33:1–34:12, completing the Torah with Moses’ final blessing, and then begin Genesis 1:1–2:3. The circle never truly closes: the moment we finish, we return to “In the beginning.” This is the heart of the week’s Torah lesson—growth does not require a perfect ending; it asks us to begin again with renewed joy.

A Meaningful Celebration at Home

Ask each person at the table to share one teaching or Jewish memory they hope to carry into the new Torah cycle. Children can choose a favorite Torah story and draw what they would like to learn next. Prepare the home before candle lighting with a beautiful elegant challah cover, a festive Lecha Dodi Shabbat tablecloth, and a Kiddush wine fountain set for sharing the moment. Families finishing Sukkot may also enjoy keeping their Jerusalem-inspired Sukkah wall art as meaningful year-round décor.

May the final days of the festival bring your home peace, abundant blessing, and a fresh love of Torah. From Ella Judaica, Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom.
